Postnatal Education Prepares New Moms
for "Fourth Trimester"

Congratulations! You made it through an exciting pregnancy. You've read the baby books, decided whether to formula feed or breastfeed your baby, and you've delivered a beautiful baby.

Perinatal education doesn't end once your baby is born. During your child's first three months of life -- what some call the "fourth trimester" -- you and your baby will undergo many emotional and physiological changes.

For example, says Jody Kile, RNC, Director of Women/Infant Health at Northwest Texas Healthcare System (NWTHS), most women don't realize that it takes several months for their bodies to heal and get back into shape after childbirth.

"Mothers shouldn't beat themselves up over not fitting into their favorite pre-baby jeans," Mrs. Kile says. "That's to be expected for a while."

FREE CLASSES OFFERED
At Baby You, Baby Me, educational classes offered by NWTHS, new and expectant mothers will learn these "insider" secrets.

"We teach new mothers about the immediate changes that occur once their babies are born, and how to care for babies and themselves during the first few weeks after delivery," Mrs. Kile says.

Expectant mothers and new moms are welcome to bring a guest. Dinner and raffled door prizes are included for this educational evening.

CARE FOR YOUR BABY
Class topics include swaddling, feeding and bathing your baby as well as dealing with the potential "baby blues."

An all-female panel -- including an obstetrician/gynecologist, pediatrician, Nursery Registered Nurse and a new mother -- will speak with participants about the following topics and others:

  • When is too soon to take my baby out of the house?
  • How long should I let my baby cry?
  • What is jaundice, and will it harm my baby?
  • How can I tell if I'm suffering from postpartum depression?

After the panel discussion, moms-to-be and new mothers may ask questions and speak with others who are expecting.

Register for Baby You, Baby Me today! Call 806-354-1701.

Classes are free and scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the hospital's Tunnel Classroom on the following dates:

  • Monday, Feb. 5
  • Monday, June 4
  • Monday, Sept. 24
